Managing an Election
For Electoral Returning Officers running elections day to day.
Overview
An Electoral Returning Officer (ERO) runs a specific election: ballots, voters, turnout, count, and publishing results.
On Free and Pro plans you are usually the only person in your organisation, so you act as both admin and returning officer. You may see every election in the org or only those you created or were assigned to, depending on org settings.
Before you open the poll
Publish clear rules: who can vote, when voting closes, and how many seats each ballot fills. Check candidate names and vacancies before sending links. Run a dry run with a small test list if you can, and keep your login private.
Setup
Create an election from the dashboard wizard: details (title, dates), ballots (positions, vacancies, voting method), then voters.
- Step 1, Election details: title, optional schedule, folder
- Step 2, Ballots: add positions; choose STV (Scottish), FPTP, or approval; set vacancies
- Step 3, Voters: upload CSV or add rows manually (draft until you confirm)

Self-nomination
Enable self-nomination on a ballot and share the public nomination link from election details. Review pending submissions before sending voter invites. Nominations close automatically when voting opens.

Candidate profiles
Approved candidates get statement pages voters open from the ballot. Edit statements, photos, and proposers from the nominations panel.

Invitations
Confirm voters registers the list without emailing. Open voting sends one magic link per person. Preview invite email from election details.

Voting
While voting is open, voters use their links once. You cannot see rankings, only operational turnout. Re-issue a link only before that voter has cast, not after a successful vote.
Turnout
The election details page shows invited vs cast counts and email delivery stats. Send reminders to non-voters before close.

Scottish STV count
When voting closes, click Calculate results. Review round-by-round transfers before publishing.

Results
Publish results to create the public page, then optionally broadcast email to all invitees with the link and outcome.

What EROs cannot do
You cannot change org tier, branding, or user access, and you cannot see how any individual voter ranked candidates. Contact details are used for email only; cast ballots store rankings without email, and magic links are single-use.
